Okay, Susie is the first one onto the blogroll! I'm calling it Susie's Blog 'cause Creative Writing Blog is a wee bit generic.

Blogs of Interest

Hello students! I hope you are all having a good time getting your blogs set up.

I wanted to draw your attention to a few literary blogs that offer a good introduction to the ideas and concerns of contemporary writers. You can read about a writer's current projects, critical responses, odd bits of autobiography, and otherwise get the lay of the land:
* Bookslut Blog: An amazingly comprehensive catalog of reactions to contemporary fiction and culture.
* Equanimity: The daily stream of consciousness of NYC-based poet Jordan Davis.
* Fait Accompli: Poet and psychoanalyst Nick Piombino time travels through his journals and spreads the gospel of blogging.
* Hotel Point: The posts of poet John Latta are perhaps the most consistently beautiful of any blog that I know.
* Humanophone: Poet and editor Janet Holmes opines on contemporary writing and the trials and rewards of small press publishing.
* Ivy Is Here. Ivy Alvarez gives us a glimpse into the working life of a young poet.
* MobyLives: Fiction writer Dennis Loy Johnson is taking a hiatus right now, but check out the archives that mark his blog as one of the most ambitious literary sites I know of.
* Neil Gaiman: Fantasy writer Neil Gaiman shares his life and opinions.
* Ron Silliman's Blog: Ron is one of the original Language poets and the unofficial keeper of their flame on the web. You can read a sample of his work in the Postmodern American Poetry anthology.
* Ululations: Tantalizing slivers of the life and work of avant-garde performance poet Nada Gordon.
This is by no means a comprehensive list of what's out there—it's just to get you started. Be sure and click on some of the links at right, too. Enjoy!

A reminder for new students and old that fiction writer George Saunders will be giving a lecture and a reading this week up at Ithaca College. You can learn the details here. I highly recommend it—I'd be going myself if I weren't buried underneath the 'A' exam I'm taking all week long.

Welcome Interstate Managers!

That is to say, welcome to the Spring semester of my creative writing class, ENGL 281.12. We're going to have some fun. I hope you'll take the time to click on some of the links at right and perhaps sample the writing of my terrific bunch of Fall students, whose blogs can still be linked to at the lower right. And of course I'll be asking you to provide me with the links to your own brand new blog so I and your fellow students can start following your mental meanderings through poetry, fiction, and the strange territory between.

If any of you are wondering when I'm going to e-mail my response to your portfolios to you, the answer is: soon. Very soon.

Happy New Year!
